Whether you’re commissioning a 30-second project teaser or a 2-minute explainer, your script represents the backbone of your animation. Get it right, and production flows freely. Get it wrong, and you’ll pay for it later in project rewrites, confusion, and missed delivery targets.

Understanding scriptwriting fundamentals goes a long way to alleviating or even eliminating these problems. Here are the essentials to get right.

Define the message before the visuals

Most teams focus on stunning visuals. But without a solid foundation, clear narration, and scene descriptions, projects fall flat.

Before considering colour palettes or logo treatments, ask: What’s the purpose of this animation? Who is it for?”

Practically, this can be as simple as defining a primary goal, such as ‘Increasing free trial sign-ups’ or ‘Clearly explaining a new workplace regulation to my workforce.’ Everything you do from this point on should serve this directive.

Ensure you’ve defined the following, first:

◼️ Your Primary Goal (e.g., ‘Increase free trial usage’ or ‘Explain a new regulation’)
◼️ Your Specific Audience (the segment you’re addressing)
◼️ A Clear Call to Action (what you want them to do next).

Now, you’ve built a solid foundation.

But, before you continue, take care not to fall into a common trap. The so-called ‘kitchen sink’ script – one that tries to do everything for everyone.

Think of a brand story, combined with a product demo, with a recruitment piece bolted on too. The resulting mangled mess doesn’t deliver for anyone.

A good rule of thumb: for every new piece of information you want to add to your script, one old piece must be removed.

Grab attention in the first 5-10 seconds

The first 5-10 seconds of your production must grip your viewer. Anything less, and they’ve moved on.

Lead with a clear problem, an outcome, or a surprising fact. Something bold that cuts through the noise.

Strong: Cut your cloud spending by 20% this month.

Vs.

Weak: Our cost management tool provides visibility into cloud spending, to help organisations reduce expenses.

See the difference? The fundamental point here is that most people care only about their immediate problems – if you can provide an engaging hook, you’re beating the competition for their attention.

You don’t need to finalise your hook on Day One. Instead, as you craft your script, several variants will naturally pop out. A good script writing process tests different options and constantly refines them over time. A poor process is rigid and unresponsive to change.

Speak in scenes – not paragraphs

As standard, your script should consider two key components: voiceover and visuals. Each part naturally influences the other, so they should be constructed together.

Flesh out your script line-by-line in tandem with each scene. Rather than scripting a long, detailed, block of text, and then attaching a simple visual to it, break down your message into tiny, 3-5 second chunks.

Each part should convey your message clearly and with pace, telling a story that progressively builds over time.

Here's an example of a long block of text you might use for your script:

"Every week, teams lose hours chasing approvals across email, chat, and spreadsheets. Flow brings everything together in one place. Create a request in seconds, assign it to the right owner, and get a clear, time-stamped decision without the back-and-forth. You’ll see where work gets stuck, who’s on point, and what’s due next."

And here is the same script, refined as part of a rough visual storyboard:

By chunking the message into small snippets, coupled with a rough sketch, your story becomes far clearer.

Each panel presents a beat - a segment within the larger whole that adds an additional point. Rather than overwhelming your viewer with multiple pieces of information, this chunking approach allows you to effortlessly build your narrative, one beat at a time.

In Summary

A well thought out script is vital if you want to cut through the noise.

Let's recap what we've learned so far.

First, It’s vital your keep your messaging clear and to the point. Use concrete nouns and active verbs to guide your viewer from point A to B with ease.

In addition, make sure to structure your script for momentum, rather than boredom. Start with your problem, provide the solution, demonstrate your proof, and then lead your viewer on to the next step in your cycle.

At Animara Studios, our team of expert script writers have internalised this clear set of guardrails; every script we craft is built on these key foundations:

◼️ We always define the key message, the audience, and clear calls to action during our active and engaging Onboarding Call with all our clients.
◼️ We script with the viewer in mind. Clear, sharp voiceover and scene descriptions grab attention fast, using concise, easy-to-understand language.
◼️ And clear imagery is coupled, line-by-line with short, crisp narration.
